September 30, 2009. Congratulations to Nicole Brossard and translator Susanne de Lotbiniere-Harwood for the nomination of Fences in Breathing (Coach House Books, Spring 2009) for the 2009 Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize. The shortlist was announced this morning at Ben McNally Books in Toronto.
In Fences in Breathing, Anne is invited to a quiet Swiss chateau by the enigmatic Tatiana Beaujeu Lehmann, where she begins to write a novel in a language that isn't hers, a language that makes meaning foreign and keeps her alert to the world and its fiery horizon.
The Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize was established in 1997. It recognizes the year's best novel or short story collection by Canadian writers of exceptional talent. The finalists will read at the International Festival of Authors in Toronto on October 28, 2009. The winner will be announced on November 24, 2009 at the Writers' Trust Awards.
